Step 'n Wash uses an industrial-grade gas spring (commonly referred to as a shock, strut, or piston) that is concealed within the unit - it's the safest way to have your step self-retract. Other step stools are permanently in the way, or they use springs that are inherently more dangerous for users. 

Over time, the gas inside of the spring will expire and lose it's effectiveness. If your Step 'n Wash is stuck in the down or horizontal position, it's time to replace the gas spring.
