Why we exist
Everyone should be able to wash their hands
But right now, this is out of reach for too many people. Most sinks in public restrooms are too high for little people, children and anyone under 4’ 8” tall.
A person might be tall enough to go on almost every ride at Disney World—and yet not tall enough to reach the sink. We think that’s crazy!
Step ‘n Wash was invented by a frustrated parent
As Joi Sumpton was holding her three-year-old son up to the sink in a local bookstore’s restroom, she didn’t realize that she was pressing his stomach against the wet, sharp counter edge.
She started wondering why businesses have amenities like diaper changing tables, but nothing to help small children reach the sink. There were plenty of step stools to use at home, but nothing for public restrooms.
Conversations with other parents quickly confirmed that this was a real problem. So Joi hired a leading Atlanta engineering firm and after numerous designs, prototypes and extensive testing, Step ‘n Wash launched in 2007.
It’s now found in over 20,000 restrooms in the US and Canada.
In late 2023, Jacob Fedosky acquired the business.
“Step ‘n Wash is more than just a product company. We are a team dedicated to creating more accessible environments. I firmly believe that nobody should ever have to skip the sink.”
It's not just a step stool. It's independence.
For parents
Step ‘n Wash makes restroom breaks less stressful and awkward. It reduces mess and increases hygiene, helping parents enforce potty training habits and making handwashing possible for those who can’t lift their kids.
For children
Washing their hands becomes more enjoyable and comfortable. Children take pride in doing things themselves and are less likely to be germy!
For little people
Being able to wash their hands independently provides a sense of dignity and self-reliance. They feel seen and understood, no longer needing to rely on hand sanitizer or assistance from others.
92.8%
of parents said that they struggle to properly wash their children's hands in public restrooms.
38.5%
of parents actively avoid going to stores & restaurants if they know the restroom isn’t family friendly.
If your goal is to improve your customer experience, sink access is a problem you can fix easily, quickly and cost-effectively.
“It’s so difficult washing my toddler’s hands in public bathrooms. The sinks are too high for children and the counters are usually too wet to sit her up on.”
“It blows my mind every time take my kids to the zoo—the zoo!—and they can't wash their hands without me propping them up on my knee.”
“My biggest pet peeve is not having step stools in the restroom at restaurants, stores, etc. and ESPECIALLY places that cater to families.”
”My 5-year-old daughter with dwarfism could reach the sink for the first time in a public restroom, finally!”
”I love it! It’s fun!”
- Rupert, age 4
"Due to chronic illness I can't always lift my child. There are a lot of people that struggle with it. And I’m allergic to hand sanitizer so it makes life very difficult when my children can't use sinks.”
