You want the people you’re designing spaces for to get the most out of them. But standard sink heights put handwashing out of reach for children, little people and anyone under 4’8”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from the A&D community

What are the health & safety impacts of Step 'n Wash?

Step 'n Wash enables safe and accessible handwashing for children, as well as adults with certain height-related disabilities.

  • Hand sanitizer doesn't kill norovius, which is the most common stomach bug and is most commonly spread after using the restroom or changing a diaper. Only proper handwashing with soap and water kills norovirus
  • Caregivers who are pregnant, disabled, or mobility-impaired may not be able to physically lift a child to the sink
  • Adults with dwarfism and other height-related disabilities may not physically be able to reach the soap or faucet
  • Lifting, hoisting, and pressing a child against the sink or counter creates restroom hazards and unsafe conditions (as well as a poor customer experience)
Does adding a step stool introduce tripping or slipping hazards to the restroom?

Step 'n Wash is installed underneath and behind the front edge of the sink or counter, so it's never in the walkway. Plus, thanks to a concealed spring and damper, the step automatically retracts itself to the upright position after a user steps off of it.

The step is securely anchored to the floor, so it doesn't move or wobble when a guest uses it. This also prevents it from being stolen or moved.

Working around inaccessible sinks is putting little people, children and parents at risk. Balancing precariously, jumping, lifting and kid-wrangling is stressful and can be dangerous and messy. More water on the floor means more chances of slips and falls.

What are the ADA implications of Step 'n Wash?

Step stools are not required by the ADA (yet!).

Step 'n Wash step stools are floor-mounted directly beneath a sink or counter, which renders that specific basin inaccessible to wheelchair users.

Accordingly, Step 'n Wash steps are meant to be installed in restrooms with two or more sinks, where at least one sink is accessible (clear floor space, knee and toe clearance, etc.)

What are the environmental impacts of Step 'n Wash?
  • Step 'n Wash is floor-mounted and made from durable stainless steel; it eliminates the need for disposable or easily-damaged plastic step stools
  • Step 'n Wash speeds up handwashing for families with children, reducing water use
  • Manufactured in the USA, Step 'n Wash reduces transportation emissions and supports local manufacturing
How is Step 'n Wash installed?

Step 'n Wash can certainly be installed during an existing construction project, but that's not a requirement. Step 'n Wash can easily be installed in existing restrooms with common tools and without requiring modifications to the restroom.

Each unit ships with all the required installation hardware. Installers will place four expansion anchors into the floor beneath the sink, and fasten Step 'n Wash to the anchors.

Full details are available on our installation page.

"I love to find ways to go above and beyond what is minimally required by ADA standards, and Step ‘n Wash is an easy way to do this.

The product and the story that goes with it are just so good."

CASE STUDY

Darden includes Step ‘n Wash in their restaurant remodels.

"Being of service" and "Inclusion" are core values to Darden Restaurants. So when they started on planned remodels for Olive Garden locations, it made sense to include Step 'n Wash.

A massively positive response from customers led Darden to start rolling out Step 'n Wash to Longhorn Steakhouse and Yard House locations, too.
