I can always remember watching parents in public restrooms struggle to lift their children up to
the sink to wash their hands. At the time, I never really gave much thought to this struggle that
parents went through. Of course that all changed when I became a mother. One morning, after
a children’s story time at a local bookstore, I took my three year old son Carter to the restroom.
When I lifted him up I didn’t realize that I was leaning against him and pressing his stomach against
the wet, sharp counter edge. He immediately started to cry and as I comforted him I thought to
myself…there has to be a better way!
It didn’t make sense that businesses provided so many family-friendly amenities, including a diaper
changing table in almost every public restroom, but nothing had ever been developed to help
toddlers and small children reach the sink to wash their hands. There were so many different kinds
of step stools available for children to use at home yet nothing safe had ever been designed for use
in a public restroom.
After talking with other parents I soon realized that we all shared the same frustration. I once read
that the best inventions are those that solve a problem of importance to many others so I made the
decision that I was going to be the person to solve this problem. I hired a leading engineering firm
here in Atlanta to work on my idea and after numerous designs, prototypes and rigorous product
testing, Step ‘n Wash was born.
Today, Step ‘n Wash can be found in thousands of businesses all over the USA and Canada. I
really appreciate all of the emails that I receive from parents and grandparents thanking me for
creating Step ‘n Wash. It is such a great feeling to know that something that I invented is making a
difference in people’s lives.
Thank you to everyone for all of your support!
